About Houston County

Houston County, located in southeastern Minnesota, has picturesque landscapes, historic towns, and farmland. Hard-working residents, close-knit communities, and stunning scenery are some of its unique characteristics. The 2021 census reported 18,778 residents living in Houston County. The communities have created an economy that honors its history and paves the way for an innovative future. That future is conducive to superb health care and social assistance systems, quality educational services, manufacturing or retail trade, and small family-owned businesses.

Houston County is experiencing a shortage of available child care. In August 2022, First Children’s Finance conducted a child care need assessment that showed an approximate shortage of 206 child care slots. Child care shortages make it difficult for employers to operate at full staffing capacities because families must either cut back on the hours they work or opt out of the workforce altogether to care for their children. To support workforce development, retention, and economic growth, Houston County is participating in the Rural Child Care Innovation Program to explore and implement local and right-sized solutions to address the child care need being experienced in the region.
