Ortonville is a city in Big Stone County at the southern tip of Big Stone Lake, along the border of South
Dakota. With a 2020 population of 1,774, it is the 273 rd largest city in Minnesota and is the county seat
of Big Stone County. The community has many strong features including an amazing 18-hole golf course,
booming lake economy, hometown feel, top scale health care system, and real estate opportunities that
are growing every day.
Big Stone County currently has 18 family childcare providers, many of which may be retiring soon.
Families with young children, as well as local businesses, recognize the need to increase the child care
supply. Child care is the number one challenge facing the region, according to the 2019 and 2020 annual
regional survey that was sent to Local Units of Government within the UMVRD Region. As of June 2021 it
is estimated that Big Stone County has an approximate need for 44 child care slots.
